LA Fitness and the Shops at Rossmoor filed a new application for essentially the same project that was withdrawn last fall for a 37,000 square-foot health club to be built in the parking are behind Sprouts.
The draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was made available for public review.
This project was withdrawn last fall before the City Council could have an official vote on the project. The project was withdrawn at least partially due to public pressure based on concerns about traffic in the Shops center and parking and traffic impacts on the nearby Rossmoor streets.
Those same concerns are being raised with this resubmission as none of them have been addressed in the proposal.
Some Rossmoor and Seal Beach Residents have formed the non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness or CALAF to create a unified voice opposing the fitness club development project. You can find out more about CALAF here on their website.
The RHA filed our comments in a letter to the City of Seal Beach. You can read our letter here.
7/7/2017 – The Seal Beach Planning Commission voted to deny the required Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the LA Fitness project in The Shops at Rossmoor on June 27. The formal resolution to deny the CUP is slated for July 17th. There will be no public comment on this resolution, so there is no need for the public to show up – at least not at this point. After the CUP is formally denied, the developer can appeal to the City Council. We will keep you posted.
6/15/2017 – Seal Beach Planning Commission Hearing on LA Fitness Project is on TUESDAY JUNE 27TH AT 7:00 PM in the Seal Beach City Council Chambers. Click here to read the full notice
This meeting will likely result in vote in favor of the project forcing the final project approval to the Seal Beach City Council at some point in July. These meetings are our last chance to stop this project. The impacts from this development on Rossmoor are already being felt and are why the RHA has serious concerns about the project and opposes it in its present form.
Please plan to attend even if you don’t want to speak up and be heard, your presence will make an impact.
3/7/2017 – There are a series of Town Hall Meetings scheduled for later this month. These are meetings scheduled by the Shops at Rossmoor as they are seeking support for the project and the EIR.
