LA Fitness and the Shops at Rossmoor have filed a new application for essentially the same project that was withdrawn last fall for a health club to be built in the parking are behind Sprouts. A new “initial study” has been prepared and can be viewed here on the Seal Beach City website.
This project was withdrawn last fall before the City Council could have an official vote on the project. The project was withdrawn at least partially due to public pressure based on concerns about traffic in the Shops center and parking and traffic impacts on the nearby Rossmoor streets.
Those same concerns are being raised with this resubmission as none of them have been addressed in the proposal. An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be done for the project early this year (2017).
The Shops management has begun warning vehicles parked overnight in the lot and promise ticketing will begin soon. Further, they have told shop owners in the center to have their employees park on Seal Beach Blvd or in the lots near the street so the back lot area will be more empty for the EIR process.
Some Rossmoor and Seal Beach Residents have formed the non-profit Coalition Against LA Fitness or CALAF to create a unified voice opposing the fitness club development project. You can find out more about CALAF here on their website.
The RHA filed our comments in a letter to the City of Seal Beach. You can read our letter here.
2/15/2017 Update: The Environmental Impact Report (EIR) study/process is underway. It will be several months before the report will be available for public comment. The Coalition Against LA Fitness is holding meetings and raising funds during this time. More information can be found here on their website.
Keep an eye on this page for further information as it becomes available.
